Downtown Fredericksburg Restaurateurs Bring Global Perspectives to UMW Course
Downtown Fredericksburg’s vibrant culinary scene is helping inspire learning beyond the restaurant table. Two local business owners, Orofino chef and owner Danilo Orofino and Foode co-owner Joy Crump, are participating in the University of Mary Washington course “World on a Plate,” which explores global cuisines, culture, and the connections food creates within communities.
According to the university, the course gives students and community members the opportunity to learn about international culinary traditions while engaging directly with chefs and food professionals whose work reflects those influences. Sicilian-born chef Danilo Orofino will share insights into the diverse culinary regions of Italy and how his heritage shapes the menu and dining experience at Orofino in downtown Fredericksburg.
Joy Crump, a nationally recognized chef and former Top Chef contestant, will also lend her expertise to the course. In addition to co-owning Foode, Crump has cooked for the James Beard Foundation and remains active in initiatives focused on food policy, chef advocacy, and positive change within the culinary industry.
The involvement of these two downtown restaurateurs highlights Fredericksburg’s growing reputation as a destination where culinary talent, entrepreneurship, culture, and community engagement intersect. Their participation also demonstrates how local businesses continue to play an important role in educational experiences and regional conversations around food, culture, and innovation.
