Downtown FXBG speed limits poised to drop

May 11, 2022 | Fredericksburg City News |

Downtown Fredericksburg maximum speed limits are likely to drop from 25 MPH to 20 MPH to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Fredericksburg City Council on Tuesday took the first of two required votes to reduce the maximum speed limit in the following areas of downtown:

  • Sophia Street between Lafayette Boulevard and Amelia Street
  • Caroline Street between Lafayette Boulevard and Lewis Street
  • William Street between Washington Avenue and Sophia Street
  • Lafayette Boulevard between Sophia Street and Prince Edward Street

The pending change is one of numerous efforts the City is taking to make the Central Business District an even friendlier place for pedestrians and cyclists. Other initiatives have included traffic signalization, crosswalk bollards, traffic-calming installations, traffic enforcement and new bike racks. Additional steps are in the works, and additional details can be found here.
