Fredericksburg Advances Sustainability Efforts While Treasurer’s Office Earns State Accreditation

The City of Fredericksburg continues to make meaningful progress in serving the community through innovation, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. Recent milestones include the addition of the City’s first electric vehicle to its municipal fleet and the renewed state accreditation of the Treasurer’s Office both reflecting the City’s commitment to responsible government and continuous improvement.

The Public Works Department recently introduced an electric truck to support the daily operations of the City’s Urban Forestry Program. The vehicle, which will be used by the City Arborist, represents the next phase of the department’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions by transitioning from traditional gas-powered equipment and vehicles to electric alternatives whenever practical.

The purchase was supported by a $10,000 reimbursable grant from Virginia Clean Cities, funded through Virginia’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program, which serves the Fredericksburg region.

On average, a comparable gas-powered vehicle produces between 6.7 and 8.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The addition of the electric truck supports the City’s long-term goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining dependable public services. It also aligns with the City’s vehicle replacement policy, which encourages the consideration of electric and alternative-fuel vehicles whenever operationally feasible in support of City Council’s vision of working toward a carbon-neutral future.

The City also celebrated another significant achievement as the Treasurer’s Office renewed its accreditation through the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia (TAV), effective July 1, 2026. The voluntary accreditation recognizes treasury offices that meet Virginia’s highest standards for financial management and public service. This year, 77 treasurers’ offices across the Commonwealth earned accreditation.

To receive accreditation, the Treasurer’s Office must successfully complete an independent audit with no findings of material weakness, demonstrate ongoing professional education for leadership and staff, complete ethics training, and maintain comprehensive written policies governing personnel, customer service, and delinquent collections.

While accreditation is voluntary, it reflects the office’s dedication to accountability, sound financial practices, and exceptional service to Fredericksburg residents and businesses.

Together, these accomplishments highlight Fredericksburg’s continued investment in a stronger future embracing innovative solutions that protect the environment while maintaining the high standards of professionalism and public service residents expect from their local government.
