Fredericksburg Area Museum to host Black History Month Walking Tour
On Saturday, February 18th, the Fredericksburg Area Museum is partnering with the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation for a Black History Month Walking Tour.
Starting at 11:00am on the 18th, Black Businesses & Entrepreneurship in Fredericksburg, 1787 – Present will begin its tour at the HFFI Offices, at 1200 Caroline Street. The tour will follow the journeys of many black business owners, whose stories are deeply rooted in Fredericksburg history. Dr. Gaila Sims, FAM Curator of African American History and Special Projects, will lead the tour.
The tour will touch on stories such as John DeBaptiste and the formation of the French John’s Wharf in the 18th century, Henry Deane’s development of Liberty Town in the post-Civil War era, and the history of mid-20th century black businesses on Princess Anne Street.
In honor of Black History Month, this walking tour will uncover how Fredericksburg has contributed to such a deep layer of history, and how the stories of black citizens have continued to grow the culture of this city.
Tickets to the walking tour are $25 to the general public, and $20 to FAM and HFFI members. Follow Fredericksburg Area Museum on Facebook.
