Fredericksburg region’s telework share among highest in U.S.
The Fredericksburg region has one of the highest teleworking rates in the country, a new analysis by the Economic Innovation Group shows.
About 22 percent of the Fredericksburg region’s workforce works remotely, according to the analysis, which is based on U.S. Census data. That ranked 25th-highest in the United States.
The analysis showed that remote work tends to be more common in regions with higher education levels, longer commute times and more-expensive housing markets.
Washington, D.C., at 33.6 percent, had the highest teleworking rate in the country, followed by San Francisco and Austin. Remote work share has tripled nationwide from 5.6 percent in 2019 to 17.9 percent in 2021 — a big jump explained in large part to the pandemic and subsequent shift of employers’ attitude about teleworking.
The Fredericksburg region was one of only three in the country with a population under 1 million to make the Top 25. The others are Wilmington, Del.; and Portola, Calif.
