News Release: Fredericksburg Enhances Sidewalk Accessibility with ADA Updates
The City of Fredericksburg will begin a comprehensive infrastructure improvement project on Monday, June 23, 2025, focused on enhancing pedestrian mobility and accessibility through the reconstruction of sidewalks and upgrades to ADA-compliant access ramps.
This project is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to improve public infrastructure and ensure that sidewalks and pedestrian routes are accessible to all residents and visitors, including those with mobility challenges. These upgrades are part of the City’s annual Pavement Rehabilitation Program, which includes sidewalk and ADA improvements. As part of the FY25 Paving Rehabilitation Project, the City’s paving contractor completed 71 ADA accessibility ramp upgrades, while the City’s Public Works crews constructed an additional 15 accessibility ramps, further advancing the City’s commitment to pedestrian accessibility and infrastructure improvement.
Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 23rd, and will continue through mid-October 2025, weather permitting. During this time, residents and visitors should expect intermittent construction activity, as well as temporary disruptions to pedestrian access and parking in affected areas.
Project Locations:
The planned improvements will take place in two primary areas:
- Princess Anne Street from Lewis Street to Lafayette Boulevard– The project will include the reconstruction of selected sidewalks segments and the upgrade of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb access ramps. These enhancements are intended to improve overall walkability and ensure compliance with federal accessibility standards.
- Idlewild Boulevard from the 1300 block to the 2000 block – Sidewalk reconstruction will be performed on various segments. In order to complete this work, the removal of several existing trees will be required. The City has evaluated the necessary tree removals and is coordinating efforts to mitigate the impact on the neighborhood’s tree canopy.
Parking Restrictions:
To facilitate construction and ensure public safety, No Parking signage will be posted in designated work zones. All motorists are urged to observe posted signs. Vehicles parked in violation of these notices will be subject to towing at the owner’s expense.
The City of Fredericksburg is committed to investing in infrastructure that meets the needs of all community members. These upgrades are essential to ensuring safe, accessible, and well-maintained pedestrian routes throughout the City.
Residents with questions or concerns about the project may contact the Public Works Department at 540-372-1023 or visit fredericksburgva.gov for additional information and project updates.
